How to Hear the Lectures and View the Accompanying Slides

  • The RealPlayer plug-in for your particular browser can be found at www.real.com
  • This plug-in is required for the audio elements of this site.
  • Each page of this presentation has both slide and RealAudio content. We have segmented the audio of the lecture to correspond with the appropriate slide. You may go through each page linearly or you may use the thumbnail button to select a page in this lecture to jump to. You might be required to wait a bit until all of the audio content is loaded, RealAudio is more network intensive data than images.
  • The image of the current slide, when clicked, opens a larger window. The large window contains "Next" and "Back" buttons. To close this window, simply click the close button on the menubar.
  • Note that some of the speakers have removed data slides from the site to preserve their rights to publish the data. We have indicated the missing slides.

Audio Controls

In order to listen to a Lecture.CAST presentation you must have the most recent version of the RealAudio player installed on your computer.

The RealAudio player will allow you to hear CD quality audio over the internet as long as you have at least a 14.4 Kbps modem.  You can get the RealAudio player at www.real.com. There are two products available, RealPlayer and RealPlayer Plus, look for the free RealPlayer.

The RealPlayer Plus offers additional features but it is not free.

There are very detailed instructions on the RealPlayer site that will lead you through the installation of the player.  At the end, there is a test file which will play automatically for you if the player has been successfully installed.

Once you have installed the RealPlayer 5.0, you will see the following controls on all Lecture.CAST presentations.

The Lecture.CAST icon will link you to this page when ever you need help.

This is the Play/Pause button, use it to pause the lecture at any time.  Click it again to resume playing.

The next button is the Stop button, this will stop the presentation and return to the beginning.

The next icon is the Slide Position Controller.  This is used to advance to any point in the presentation.  Click and hold the slider to start the lecture at any point.  When you move this slider it is necessary for the player to "rebuffer".  This is normal, and may take several seconds.   The presentation will start to play again as soon as it has "rebuffered".

The last icon displays the total length of the presentation and what segment is currently playing.  When the numbers on the left are counting, you should be able to hear audio. Make sure your speakers volume is up.

Troubleshooting

Lecture.CAST uses cutting edge technology to bring lectures to you over the internet using standard telephone lines.  If you are having problems listening to a lecture at any time, these tips may help you.

Known Issues for Macs using Netscape Navigator, Version 4.05 and below...
The Lecture.CAST Presentation Module uses state of the art programming technologies to provide the the user the most intuitive and interactive experience possible.   However, Mac users viewing the site with Netscape Navigator, version 4.05 and below WILL experience some problems.  To resolve possible conflicts, we strongly recommend that you download and install the most recent version of Netscape Navigator, or Internet Explorer from these links:

Netscape%202.0            Get%20Microsoft%20Internet%20Explorer

What does it mean when the player is Rebuffering?
Lecture.CAST uses streaming technology to deliver the audio of the presentations to you as you need them.  This means that instead of sending one large audio file that would take a long time to download, our servers send small segments of the lecture to your computer as you need them.
When the player loses connection to the sever for a number of different reasons, it needs to rebuffer the signal of the audio.  The reason for this rebuffering could be anything from network congestion between you and our streaming server, to your browser doing something else, such as downloading another file.

My RealPlayer keeps needing to rebuffer.  Why?
Depending on your connection speed to the internet, you may experience network congestion which will force the RealPlayer to rebuffer.  If you are having this problem, we suggest that you pause the audio when a new image is downloading, this will allow the browser to download the image.  Once the image is done, restart the audio by pressing the play button.  This will eliminate the need to rebuffer  99% of the time.
