Session 21
Symposium Controversies in Antiretroviral Therapy Session Time: Tuesday, 7 - 9 pm Room 4B |
Background: Perinatal HIV-1 transmission in the United States has been dramatically reduced by the use of antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy. Interventions to prevent perinatal transmission and concepts for the optimal management of HIV disease in women are evolving. Many challenges remain for the optimal management of maternal HIV disease in the setting of pregnancy and over the life span of the woman. Conclusions: This talk will highlight several challenges that clinicians and women with HIV face when making decisions about the use of antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy. The issues to be addressed include the importance of pre-conception counseling, the prevention and management of antiretroviral resistance, monitoring and management of toxicity, and the safety and efficacy of antiretroviral agents during pregnancy. Clinical cases will be used to illustrate key points and to highlight areas in which further research is needed. |
