Jonathan Ellen

Background: New cases of HIV among US adolescents and young adults
continue to be reported with alarming frequency. To the extent that trends do
not suggest significant slowing of the epidemic in populations most affected by
the epidemic, efforts to prevent HIV infection among US adolescents and young
adults, including HIV prophylactic HIV vaccines must continue.
Conclusions: The goal of this presentation to is describe the state of
the HIV epidemic among adolescents and young adults in the United States.
Specifically, this presentation will:
describe trends in incidence of new HIV diagnoses among US adolescents
and young adults; compare and contrast trends and risk factors between male and
female adolescents; and discuss implications of these data for the inclusion of
adolescents and young adults in domestic HIV vaccines and microbicide trials.
